Our history

1998

  • The Cercle Magellan was set up by 5 founders and centered on international mobility
  • Inauguration at a Senate dinner on 18 June 1998
  • The 1st Steering and Development Committee began its inaugural term
  • First plenary meeting
    • 20 member companies

1999

  • Launch of a website for members with an online resource bank
  • Launch of our first topic-based meetings and working groups

2000

  • The first country guides went live
  • First work on secondment
  • Setup of the Professional Committee
    • 49 member companies

2001

  • The Development Committee gave the Cercle Magellan international scope
  • 1st website redesign
  • Inaugural annual conference
    • 64 member companies

2002

  • New activities on offer to members with the launch of:
    • permanent working groups;
    • benchmarks;
    • case studies.
  • 1st Cercle Magellan annual newsletter

2003

  • Creation of the Cercle Magellan Quality Label based on member companies’ recommendations and publication of the 1st accredited service provider directory
  • The status of official fellow was introduced
  • The Cercle Magellan moved from Boulogne-Billancourt to the 5th arrondissement of Paris.
  • Launch of the first country focus day, on Germany.

2004

  • The Institut Magellan, our professional training body, launched
  • Launch of Cercle Magellan delegations in Lille and Lyon
  • Publication of Expatrié : rêve et réalité by Jean Pautrot and Yves Girouard (Editions Liaisons)
    • 74 member companies

2005

  • Launch of the Conseil Magellan de la Mobilité Internationale, a body for liaison between member companies and the authorities. The aim of this working relationship is to simplify French companies’ international development and to increase France’s attractiveness from an economic point of view.
  • Preparation and publication of the international mobility white paper

2006

  • Setup of the International Comp & Ben Club
  • Launch of a Cercle Magellan delegation in Singapore
  • The Institut Magellan launched the Specialized MBA in International HR and Compensation & Benefits Management
    • 139 member companies

2007

  • A new version of our website went live

2008 - The Cercle Magellan celebrated its 10th anniversary!

  • 1st International Comp & Ben Club annual conference
  • Presentations at the Global HR forum in London and the International Talent forum in San Francisco
  • Conseil Magellan de la Mobilité Internationale plenary

2009

  • Launch of a working group on talent management in an international context
  • Publication of the first Magellan International Mobility Competency Framework

2010

  • Launch of Comp & Ben meetings in Singapore (benchmark on salary increases and a topical subject in the region)
  • New online discussion forum for each club
    • 128 International Mobility Club member companies, 67 International Comp & Ben Club member companies

2011

  • Launch of the International Talent Management Club with some 15 member companies
  • Publication of the new Conseil Magellan de la Mobilité Internationale white paper

2012

  • Publication by the Cercle Magellan of the first Magellan Compensation and Benefits Competency Framework
  • Deployment of our new website

2013

  • Signature of a partnership agreement between the Cercle Magellan and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ crisis center
  • Signature of a partnership agreement with the Center for European and International Liaisons for Social Security (CLEISS)
    • 137 International Mobility Club member companies
    • 125 International Comp & Ben Club member companies
    • 51 International Talent Management Club member companies

2014

  • The Conseil Magellan de la Mobilité Internationale becomes the Conseil Magellan de l’International. Its scope is extended to compensation & benefits and to international HR
  • Publication of the new edition of the Conseil Magellan de l’International white paper
  • Publication of Enjeux RH dans les Entreprises Internationales by Yves Girouard
  • The company moved from Boulevard Saint-Michel to rue Delambre (14th arrondissement)
  • The start of work on designing Magellan Certifications: 39 experts, 22 working groups

2015

  • Launch of the Specialized MBA in Human Resources Management in International Companies, with an advisory board made up of 21 French and international HRDs

2016

  • Launch of the Réseau ETI for international HR
  • Publication of second editions of the Compensation & Benefits and International Mobility Competency Frameworks in French and in English
  • Official launch of Magellan Certifications and their associated certificate training courses
  • 20th anniversary of the Specialized MBA in Human Resources and International Mobility Management and 10th anniversary of the Specialized MBA in International HR and Compensation & Benefits Management
  • The Institut Magellan develops teaching partnerships with the Xavier Institute of Management (India), UUM (Malaysia, ESCG Business School (Morocco), ISM (Senegal), KMBS (Ukraine) and Rome Business School (Italy).

2017

  • The Specialized MBAs in Human Resources and International Mobility Management and International HR and Compensation & Benefits Management come 1st and 2nd in the Eduniversal league table of the best HR master’s, specialized master’s and specialized MBAs in France
    • Over 1,800 professionals:
      • 151 International Mobility Club member companies
      • 134 International Comp & Ben Club member companies
      • 67 International Talent Management Club member companies

2018 - The Cercle Magellan celebrated its 20th anniversary!

  • Publication of the first Magellan International Human Resources Competency Framework
  • Launch of the Specialized MBA in Management Control and Social Performance Management in International Companies

2019

  • The Specialized MBA in International Human Resources and Compensation & Benefits Management takes 15th place in the Eduniversal league table of the best HR master’s, specialized master’s and specialized MBAs in Europe
  • The company moved from rue Delambre to rue Armand Moisant (Paris 15th arrondissement)

2020

  • Information meetings organized to support members during the Covid-19 pandemic
  • The Institut Magellan’s 3 MBAs obtain the 3 top places in the Eduniversal league table of the best HR master’s, specialized master’s and specialized MBAs in France
    • The Cercle Magellan brings together some 250 companies
